Castlefield -Manchester was born to the residential market in the late 1980s when the Central Manchester Development Corporation was formed to bring life back into the city. In those days city living was virtually unheard of with fewer than 200 properties in the City Centre, most of which were vacant at the weekends.
Castlefield is well known for its waterways and its history including the Roman Forts that have been brought back to life, its cobbled streets, working canal, walkways and the well renowned Science and Industry Museum.
One of the first developments in Castlefield was Castle Quay also known as Middle Warehouse, a fantastic warehouse overlooking the canal and home to Hits Radio. This development still houses some of the most amazing penthouses in Manchester. Shortly after this came Woollam Place, Potato Wharf located on Liverpool Road, a new build by Bellway Homes offering properties for as little as £45,000 – now the same property would be achieving around £140,000. In true Castlefield style more properties were built around the canal Slate Wharf, Timber Wharf, The Boxworks and Castlefield Locks all offer the tranquillity of the waterways in the heart of the city, there is fantastic accommodation and lots of outside space.
Soon to follow were the bars and restaurants and the pedestrian bridge linking Castlefield to the City Centre. In the late 1990s, the flyover was removed as the whole road infrastructure changed.
One of the latest additions to the area is “Castlefield Locks” a popular part of Manchester’s nightlife located along the waterways, where you will find a good selection of bars and restaurants.
